Betsy Roberts, Metalsmith

Betsy Roberts and the tools of the art

I revel in the process of manipulating metals, in each integral phase of materializing something where there was nothing. I explore the limits of the metals and forms, within a framework of utility and artisanship.

Betsy's silver hammerFevered ideas, which spring from moments of life-meaning, send me to plans and approaches which draw me to materials and techniques. Certain experiences I cherish and fold into my momentary joy: molten, shimmering metal; the dull yet deep glow of annealing and the sweet, soft, pliable result; the satisfaction of a piece’s smooth function.

Trillium, from thought into being.By using reformulated icons or patterns drawn from personal, social and mythic icon dictionaries, I play with metal in order to create something material which points toward and resonates with these life-meanings.
