
Coach Bettiga has been a life long resident of the Eel River Valley community. Mike started his colorful athletic career in the Scotia and Rio Dell Elementary school. Arriving for his first tour at Fortuna Union High School in 1964, Mike joined the high school track and basketball teams. This is were Mike made his first contact with one of Humboldt County's great high school basketball coaches, Bob Orr of Fortuna. Mike was voted
"Mr. Hustle" with a career high 22 point against Hoopa High School.
Mike went on to attend College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University, graduating from Humboldt in 1975 with a B.A. in Physical Education and minoring in history. Mike started his teaching and coaching experience at College of the Redwoods. In 1973 and 1974, Mike helped CR win back to back Conference Championships. 1972 to 1975 were busy years for Mike, he was invited to try out for the U.S.A. Summer Olympic team in 1972, but opted to play professional football for the San Francisco 49'ers for three years before suffering a career ending injury.
Mike returned for his second tour of duty at Fortuna High School in 1975. Mike has since coached football, track, tennis and basketball, coaching both men's and women's programs.

Mike lives in Fortuna and has two children. Maren lives in the Sacramento area and she works for the County of Yolo. Raleigh is currently working in the high tech sector, working for Optaphone in Redway.
