Lani was born on April 28, 1980, in Port Townsend Washington. When she was three
years old Lani moved back to Fortuna with her mother and brother Mike because her
father had passed away and her family wanted to be closer to her grandparents. Lani got
involved in sports when she was five years old; even then, she knew sports would always be
a main focus in her life. She began T-Ball for a couple of years, then played girl's softball
for several more years. She also played basketball in the Fortuna Recreation Department
league for several years beginning when she was six. In seventh and eight grades, she
played basketball for Toddy Thomas Elementary, and it was during this time that
basketball became very important to her. She had a very special coach named Preston Fairchild, who was also her math teacher. He
taught her much about the game, about attitude, overcoming personal challenges and
spirit. Lani feels that her coaches at FUHS give her the same. "They give us so much in
the way of knowledge, encouragement, and discipline; every time I play a game, a big part
of my motivation is to give back to them what they constantly give to us; their best," she
says.
Lani comes from a sports-minded family. Her grandfather, Ken Dunaway (known several decades ago as the "Fortuna Flash"), owns two sporting goods stores, and is in the Humboldt State Hall of Fame for football, baseball, track, and basketball. Her great uncle, Bob Dunaway, was also inducted into the HSU Hall of Fame for basketball. In addition to basketball, ( and homework) her other interests include water skiing, horseback riding, snow skiing, snorkeling and boogie boarding. Lani is also active in the Hydesville Community Church Youth Group; she went to Mexico last spring to build houses for the poor, and she plans to do the same this Easter Vacation. She is also on the FUHS yearbook staff.
