Melissa
has been playing sports since second grade.
She began playing basketball at Cuddeback Elementary on the Peewee teams.
She wasn't on a real basketball team until her 6th grade year.
She was on the Junior Varsity team both her 6th and 7th grade years at
Cuddeback and then on the Varsity team her 8th grade year.
Her 8th grade year her team took 1st place in league.
She also enjoyed playing on the actual court of the Sacramento Kings in
the Arco Arena.
In the spring of her 8th grade year she played on Rex Collingsworth’s
and Randy MacMillan’s AAU team, the Lady Eagles.
She would like to thank Rex and Randy for making her skills come out.
Her freshman year she played for Dennis Rosser on the freshman team at
Fortuna High. She
was awarded with the Jennifer Nunnemaker award and was a starting guard.
During her sophomore year she went on to play on the JV team coached by
Howard Scott where she also started as a guard.
Last year she was a guard on the Varsity team. Now as a senior she a
starting guard on the varsity team, again coached by Howard Scott. She is
looking forward to a great season.
Another
sport Melissa enjoys is volleyball.
She started playing in 6th grade.
In 7th and 8th grade she was on the Varsity team at Cuddeback.
When she was a freshman she started at a setter/outside hitter on the JV
team. Her
team recognized her as the MVP. Her sophomore year was her stand out year.
She also started as the setter/outside hitter. She was awarded the
Gatorade Player of the Year, Humboldt Del Norte Honorable Mention, and again,
MVP. Her
junior year she was also on the Varsity team. She would have came out and shown
her true talent and love for the sport, but her season was cut short due to
personal reasons.
She has tons of great memories from her years of volleyball.
Melissa
also enjoys doing track and field.
She participates in the high jump, triple jump, and pole vault.
She likes to pole vault because she feels like she's flying through the
air. She
has made a lot of good friends doing it.
Academically,
Melissa has excelled.
She has maintained a 3.5 GPA and has taken all college prep classes.
She is a part of CSF (California Scholarship Federation) and NHS
(National Honors Society).
Her 8th grade, year she received the American Legion Award for courage,
honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service.
Next year she plans to attend a four-year university. At the moment she
is unsure where she will be going though
When she is not in school she likes to spend time with her family and friends. She loves to go to Florida and visit her grandparents in the summer. She loves being on the beach lust laying back and getting tan. She is a very laid back; go with the flow, kind of person.
