Kym has been involved with athletics since she was four years old. Until the age of nine, she was on the Redwood Swim Club, which her mother coached. Kym then began playing basketball for the Fortuna Parks and Recreation league; she also began playing softball for Fortuna Little League. A few years later, she also began soccer. Basketball has always been Kym’s love, though. In fifth grade, Kym began playing for Fortuna Town School. At Town School, Kym played basketball through eighth grade. During her eighth grade year, Kym hit the game-winning basket of the St. Bernard’s Tournament championship game and she was selected Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She had many dedicated and knowledgeable coaches when she was at Town School, including Brandon Knudson and John Crotty, her seventh and eighth grade coaches. Kym played freshmen basketball at Fortuna High School and last year, played on the Varsity team. She loves the fast pace and excitement of basketball and has always enjoyed the game.
As well as playing basketball, Kym is involved with other sports. She is a three-year starter at shortstop for the Fortuna High School softball team. Kym has received the Best Defense award her sophomore and junior years. She has also played on an ASA team the last three summers. Her team attended the national tournament the last two years, where they placed as high as seventh place. After playing soccer her freshmen year, Kym returned to that sport this fall. Kym also has continued to swim for the Scotia Swim Team “during her spare time”. Kym’s mother is also the coach of that team. Her mom has influenced the way she has played sports ever since she was a little kid through her positive attitude and dedicated coaching style.
