Larry Sims

Larry Sims’ music career started at the age of twelve when he taught himself how to play the guitar. As his guitar playing improved and progressed he formed several well received rock and folk groups. His first experience in a recording studio was in 1963. Then, in Larry’s words, “there were more bands, surfing and college.”

In 1967, while still in college, Larry met the singers and players that together would launch a serious career in music. The only obstacle was the band, well known as The Sunshine Company, had no bass player, so Larry said “I’ll learn it,” put down the guitar, and began his bass career.

The manager of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band heard the The Sunshine Company while they were playing in Southern California. He met them in the dressing room and said “I’m going to make you stars.” Within two weeks Larry and The Sunshine Company were signed with Imperial Records and had their first of three hits in just a few months. Larry’s interval with The Sunshine Company led to over fifty television appearances and touring with major acts like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Poco and others. Larry subsequently found himself playing with Greg Allman. Greg and Duane Allman are, of course, The Allman Brothers.

In 1970 Larry was invited by Jim Messina to join a new group which would becom famous as Loggins & Messina. Larry contributed his high harmonies and bass expertise, and the group received many gold and platinum records and Grammy Nominations throughout their career. Larry continues to perform at reunion shows.

Following his Loggins & Messina career Larry played with Chris Hillman of The Byrds, and Spencer Davis. He also worked with production crews on several major motion pictures.

Larry now resides in beautiful Colorado where he continues to play and write music, and looks forward to his latest venture, “The RETROROCKETS.”
