Big Lagoon is 7 miles north of Trinidad. At its south end is the Big Lagoon County Park. Agates abound on the pebbly ocean beach. Water in the lagoon is fresh to only slightly brackish. In summer, it warms up for wading. Its fine sandy beach and quiet water are fun places for children to play. Fishing, kayacking, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing are all popular. The park has campsites back in the trees. Perimeters of the lagoon are shallow and densely vegetated. At the southeast end is a tule marsh supporting waterfowl, river otter and Roosevelt elk. Click here for a big (800x600) aerial view from the southeast. From the bluff on the south side of the lagoon is a splendid view of Patrick's Point. |
