Al Krause, 23 year veteran of kinetic racing, and his co-pilot 4 year vet Bernard Fosnaugh, astounded many by completing the entire 3 day 38 mile course from Arcata to Ferndale in one day.
The "May Day Mad Dash" or "Extreme
Kinetic" began at 8:30 am May 1st, 1999 and after successfully negotiating
all historic portions of the
course finished in Ferndale at 6:30 pm.
This new record of 7:46 minutes had only one time out
period, at
Fields Landing bay entrance, for water preparation, correct
tidal conditions, and a lunch break. Riding a proven 3 wheeled recumbent/upright
tandem with inflatablepontoons and a "Windwrap" fairing by Mueller Human
Power, Al and Bernard pushed themselves at an incredible pace, many times
beating their motorized support crews to the next destination.
With no breakdowns and only a light morning drizzle to contend
with the duo made history by going "all the way in a day". Krause was quoted
as saying, "We all had a really great time and hope to go even faster next year."
Bernard added, "This (event) should be looked at as a great
leap for Kinetics around the world. Some say the point in doing
a kinetic race is to have fun, but there is also a great challenge in kinetic
racing that some people must have forgotten about. I love to have
a lot of fun and equally a great challenge. In doing this race we challenged
ourselves, and upped the ante a bit . The technology is in front of us, so why
not take up the challenge to do better? I wanted to do better and had
a tremendous amount of fun doing so." This Extreme Kinetic event has significantly
raised the bar of kinetic achievement and renewed the original spirit of kinetic
racing.
