RRAS Christmas Bird Count Cleanup, Robert Hewitt et al, January 6, 2002
Braving rather heavy rain in the morning six brave souls worked on the Christmas Count Clean-up trip. Any birds at certain times of the day were appreciated and considering the weather we only travelled around Eureka and Arcata. In all 100 species were seen. Some of the highlights at the Arcata Marsh Project included; 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL (1m,2f) at the Butcher Slough Log Pond (eastside). 10 BARN SWALLOW over Hauser and Allen Marsh. Two RED KNOT on the Klopp Lake Islands, and 15 FORSTER'S TERN on the pilings. Along the V-Street Loop there was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON and the perenial ROSS' GOOSE. In Eureka a WHIMBREL was off the south end of Woodly Island, the new boardwalk looked very nice and was bustling with sightseers. Two HEERMAN'S GULL were along the waterfront, and 2 CASPIAN TERN with several HERRING GULL were in the gull flock on the Elk River Spit (end of Hillficker).

Thanks to all who showed up
