Long-Term Project

Welcome to the Long-Term Project

I AM GOING TO TRY USING THIS WEB PAGE FOR INFORMATION THAT YOU MIGHT FIND USEFUL FOR YOUR LONG-TERM PROJECT. IT WILL HAVE SOME OF THE INFORMATION THAT IS FOUND IN YOUR PROJECT MANUAL. I WILL TRY TO UPDATE THIS FILE AS WE GET CLOSER TO THE DUE DATE.

GET STARTED AS SOON AS YOU CAN. KEEP A DETAILED LOG BOOK. EVERYTHING WILL BE DUE BY

JUNE 1, 1996.

OVERVIEW AND REQUIREMENTS FOR LONG-TERM HISTORY PROJECT

RATIONALE: Research that I have read over the years indicates that when students are involved in long-term research projects that long-term learning occurs. In addition to learning more about history, the skills involved would also transfer so that students will be able to learn later in life anything in which they might be interested. That might be how to learn to do river rafting and where the best rivers in the world might be for river rafting. This is only one example of thousands. In my mind, the research process itself is the key to learning virtually anything that you might be interested in someday in the future.

OTHER INFORMATION

Due dates and progress reports will be announced in class. Right now these dates are firm:March 25, 1996: topics are due - changing topics later will result in a grade penalty so select and decide on your topic carefully. May 28, 1996: project presentation is due. I will set up a reporting schedule for the class. Your actual presentation might be a week later than the 28th, but you will need to be ready on that date. Again, other dates will be announced and posted in class. This includes checking your time log, progress reports and other items that you will encounter while working on your project. This project will count for about 20% of your semester grade. This translates to about one letter grade for the semester. That percentage might be adjusted some depending on the amount and type of classwork we have during the semester, but it will be very close to that percentage. Your project will be evaluated by both the class and myself. The criteria for evaluation will be made-up of the following:

  • The amount of effort you put into the project
  • Materials and information gathered.
  • Interest
  • Your time log.
  • The actual presentation.
