Once upon a time in a
backyard not far from here we had one goat, and her name was Star.
And that
my friends is how it all began….
Hi there, and
welcome to Fern*View. I'm Amy, my husband Bill and son Greg raise and
show Toggenburg's and Oberhasli's. We are located in Rio Dell, CA
which is about 80 miles south of the Oregon border, on Hwy
101.
We raise our babies on a CAE prevention
program, and test yearly for CAE. We are on Standard milk test and we LA our does every other year. We raise all our babies as if they are
keepers. Which means we handle each baby daily, teach them each to lead,
and my son sits and holds them all.
I had goats,
chickens, horses, rabbits and cows as a kid, then moved on to just rabbits, and
showed them for 18 years before finally cleaning my last cage in 2002. I talked
my husband (city boy) into a goat in 1998, then we found out that we would be
moving. We bought our house in 1998, and moved all the animals, dogs, cats,
lizard, fish, rabbits, and 2 pet goats into the new house in
October.
In June of 2000 Bill fell in love with
a little Toggenburg doe named Tink at a goat show we were attending. More times
than not he'd be "rescuing" her from the feeder and carrying her around. Greg
had made friends with Tink's owner's granddaughters and he helped them show at
that show. We were hooked. Bill was adamant that if we were to buy a goat it had
to be show quality, and Tink was not. So we came home with Tink…… and
friend.
Though the goats are really Greg and my thing, Bill helps out a lot. We have a deal, Greg shows
all the Juniors and Bill and I show the seniors of each of our breeds. We keep
family peace that way, everyone has their own breed, and Greg gets to help
everyone.
