In my opinion, the most aesthetic, yet simplistic of carpet-to-hardwood transitions would be to ensure the carpet is cut long, then turned and tacked, creating the transition between those two surfaces.
Other options include hardwood threshold, flat metal, or vinyl reducer.
The difficulty, or lack thereof, would depend on the "installers" experience.
