Jack:
I've generally read that ceramic tile should NOT be put down on plywood due to problems with grout and/or tiles cracking if the floor isn't completely level and steady. The need for this probably depends a lot on how thick the subfloor is, though, etc., FYI, the original owners of my house put ceramic tile down over 3/4# plywood in one of my bathrooms, and when I did some remodeling of the bathroom had some real problems when I tried to just replace the tile over the plywood. We eventually decided to go ahead and scrap the remaining tile, put down cementboard, then went with 6" tiles. Haven't had a problem since then (knock on wood). If it were me and it wasn't going to be too much of a problem, I'd probably go ahead and put the extra flooring down vs. relying on the plywood.
Good luck!
: I will be installing ceramic tile on the first floor of a house that is set up on pilings approx. 15' high. The piling are set in concrete. Can I install the tile directly onto the plywood or should I use some type of underlayment such as wonderboard?
