I have a solution to the carpet glue on hardwood problem and it works like a charm!
There is a product on the market called Circa Furniture Stripper. Simply apply this generously to the glue, wait five minutes and remove it with a paint scraper. The floor will be down to the hardwood completely and ready to sand. Make sure you wear protective gloves and don't splash yoyself as this stuff is very caustic, but extremely effective.
