I was told (and misinformed) that berber would be best for us because we had a dog and two cats. We replaced the carpet in our entire home with berber. It hasn't been two months yet, and we have a huge snag in the middle of our bedroom floor, with smaller ones all around the house. We were told that it took a lot to snag these carpets, but that's not true. Anything can snag them! I agree that stains come up quickly, but the snags aren't worth it.
