: : I'm remodeling and installing new tile and new carpet to a surface that's level on either sides of a doorway. What kind of height variation can I expect with 7/16 padding and low shag to 1/4 inch floor tiles? With or without backerboard, as I'm not positive I'll need it yet (my floor is 1/2" plywood over tongue in groove 2x6...which span ~ 4')

: : What is normally done to transition from carpet to tile floors in a doorway? If the tile is much higher (with backerboard) can a metal strip be used? Could I use some sort of wood trim or threshold? If tile is lower?

: Hi Dan,

: You WILL need a cementious tile backer board of 7/16" if you install any ceramic or stone tiles.

: The usual transition that we use for residential transition applications id to simply "raise" the tackstrip so that the top of the carpet nap is 1/8"-1/4" higher than the top of the tile. This is so that when the transition is stepped on, when the carpet pile crushes under-foot you will feel as little height difference as pissible. This can be achieved by doubling up on the tack strip ... installing spacers under the tackless, and in some instances, different installers have used "barn-shingles" to create a small slope to shim the tackstrip. This is done because many people do not want to have a wood or metal transition in their homes.

: A quick and cheap way could also be to simply apply a "flat-metal" transition that covers the edge of both materials ... the first requires more craftsmanship and looks better in my opinion, the second is just a quick fix for a problem area.

: Good Luck

: Paul

PS ----- you can expect your ceramic height to be approx. 1" - 1-1/8" if installed properly as opposed to the 1/2" compressed (crushed) carpet height of apporx 3/8"-1/2" depending on density of pad and carpet.

Good Luck
