: My wife and I bought a house that has white carpet where the previous owner did NOT take care of. I have steamed cleaned the carpet and even used a little bleach, but the stains are many. Can I dye the carpet myself? Is it dumb to ask if I can use Rit dye in a bottle to make a batch of say drk blue dye ?
: Anyone ou there in internet land try this with success?
: thanks,

Hey guys, here is one I can answer, nope, can not use dye from store, need carpet dye to bond or it will crock (rub off) or wash out first time you clean it,
you said cleaned it with bleach, did it bleach out, if not, you have olefin, and, you can not dye it,nylon fibers have what we call dye sites that will allow the dye to get into the fiber itself, olefin does not have dye sites, kind of like slick plastic, it will slide off!
ok, also, dye is not like painting, you can not cover up rough or worn spots, in fact, depending upon what color you choose, you may highlight the problem areas making it look worse,
look in the yellow pages for a trained carpet dyer, there are carpet cleaners who are trained to redye carpets, but, there are many who say they are who are not, so, asked where trained and by whom,
best best, buy new carpet
