: I recently bought and old victorian house that had carpet in it. pulled back the old carpet to find hardwood under it. at one time it looked like it had a rug in the center and had been painted a yellowish orange all around the edges. i've checked three rooms so far and they all have it. the paint seems to be very old. was wondering if a floor sander would remove it or would i have to use some kind of stripper first. this home is over a 100 years old and i think it would look better with the original wood floor rather than putting down more carpet.any help appreciated much. thanks dave

Sanding is the trick. Strippers tend to mess with the refinishing chemicals.
Besure your floor can be sanded and not go through the sandable thickness needed to get a good flawless finish. It is easy to get down to the T&G on an old floor that has been refinished several times in the past.
