Your only limit is the extent of your imagination and expertise.
There are some books out there that cover the subject. One I know of is "Floor Furnishing" by Catherine Tully from Lorenz Books, published in 1996. It's only 96 pages, but it can jump start your imagination and give you some ideas.
I think it's a great idea!
If you do such a floor and you intend on using a finishing product, look into the non-yellowing waterborne wood floor finishes.
