I dealt with a similiar situation a few years back and the customer deceided to add plywood to match the tile height. The only drawback was the sound and feel, as it was noticable when walking over the tiled and plywood area after the laminate floor was installed.
Though I've never done this you could use cement backer board so the sound and feel would be the same. Just my .02
