Recycled Landscaping Products Demonstration

On Saturday, May 22, 1999, ASSIST collaborated with CEED(Center for Environmental Economic Development) to construct a demonstration garden with recycled products at the Manila Community Center. The products were purchased with a grant from the Department of Energy. ASSIST members worked to install two garden beds made with recycled plastic/wood combination lumber. We helped put together a garden bed kit made entirely of recycled plastic and planted native plants. In addition, five 100% recycled plastic planters were filled with trees and placed around the garden. ASSIST participated in installing three benches made entirely of recycled plastic lumber and recycled steel. A 100% recycled plastic lumber picnic table was also included in the landscape design.

This event was part of a local Waste Awareness Week celebration. The purpose of the demonstration garden is to educate community members about the practical and appropriate use of recycled materials. Recycled plastic lumber is a functional, sustainable alternative to wood. Recycled plastic lumber can be used for the same applications as wood and lasts, without maintenance, for over 50 years. In addition, recycled plastic lumber is often more appropriate than wood for wet area applications, such as docks and boardwalks, because it will not warp, rot or expand. For benches and picnic tables, recycled plastic lumber can not be beat. Not only does it last without maintenance, but if anyone carves into the lumber, one can just sand blast recycled plastic shaving right over it, making it look as good as new.
