WORK EXPERIENCE
Institute for Local Self-Reliance Washington, D.C.
Research Assistant for the Materials Recovery Program (May 1994 -
September 1995)
- Under the Environmental Protection Agency's 'Jobs Through
Recycling' initiative, documented all aspects of local
municipal solid waste disposal and recycling in
Baltimore, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and Richmond,
Virginia tri-city region. Indentified and compared all
employment and economic development impacts related to
disposal and recycling. Co-authored Recycling Means
Business and assembled data for Two Choices for the
Future accompanying graphic that promoted results of
research.
- Documented solid waste recycling infrastructure and
adentied all recycling-based businesses for Chattanooga,
Tennessee. This work was part of 200-page report to
develop the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant outside of
Chattanooga with sustainable, environmentally sound
businesses.
- Prepared report for beauty aid manufacturer assessing
recyclability of plastic bottles currently in use.
Assessment was done based on market conditions for resin
use, availability of collection infrastructure for resin
use, and technological ability of regional materials
recovery facilities to capture bottles in question.
- Examined concept of 'manufacturer' responsibility' as a
form of waste management. Analyzed particular case
studies on impacts of this approach in Germany and
Florida.
Container Recycling Institute Staff Assistant
Washington, D.C. (September 1993 - March 1994)
- CRI is a research and information clearinghouse for
beverage container deposit legislation and the impact of
such legislation to reduce waste. Researched beneficial
impacts of established deposit systems and determined
cost savings to local governments who implement national
deposit systems. Wrote articles for the Institute's
quarterly newsletters.

Intern with Environmental Quality Department (January 1993 -
August 1993)
- Researched & documented the status of curbside
recycling programs & waste treatment trends in US
cities. atracked and monitored federal hazardous and
municipal waste legislation.
National Service League Volunteer
Irvington, NY; Budapest, Hungary (September 1991 - August 1992)
Projects:
- "WEcare" Recycling Program - Budapest,
Hungary (January 1992 - August 1992)
Coordinated three-person team that designed and
instituted white-paper recycling for East-West Building
in Budapest, Hungary. Work included negotiating with 45
Hungarian and Western firms to collect paper and
arranging for local hauler to transport regional paper
mill. Project represented first public-private recycling
initiative in Hungary.
- Westchester County Parks Department - Westchester,
NY (September 1991 - December 1991)
Helped the Parks Department organize the effort to bring
school children from urban neighborhoods to country parks
and wild areas in Westerchester County.
- Dobbs Ferry Union Free School - Dobbs Ferry, NY
(September 1991 - December 1991)
Designed and implemented comprehensive paper recycling
program to raise money for the school.
