Hanging with brass anthers pointing out in the four directions, this nodding fuchsia flower glows through the Shoji paper petals. Traditionally used for room dividers in Japan, modern Shoji paper is fireproof and dust and dirt-resistant. Alternating petals with the shoji paper are copper petals created by the process known as "anticlastic rasing", a time-intensive form of manipulating metal in two opposite curves. Tension must be maintained in the direction of the large curve while the smaller curve is hammered upwards with rows of overlapping blows. After a few rows of hammering, the piece must be heated and quenched in cold water to anneal it, softening it enough to work again. Once raised and finished, the parts are all separately patinated using different chemical processes to achieve each distinct desired color, and are then connected together |
