Windows-95/98 Instructions

There are FIVE steps to configure Windows 95/98 to dial up Humboldt Internet.

  1. Install a modem
  2. Install Dial-Up Networking
  3. Install TCP/IP protocol
  4. Change your Network settings for TCP/IP in your Control Panel
  5. Make a connection for Humboldt Internet with your Dial-Up Adapter

Step 1: Install a modem

Double click on the icon marked My Computer on your desktop and go into Control Panel

Double click on Modems.

(If you already have a modem installed go onto Step 2 to install Dial-up Networking.)

If you don't have a modem installed click Add and go through the steps Windows 95 takes you through to detect your modem. If you can't find a modem with this process, call the company who sold you your computer, or your modem, or Windows 95 software, since we can't help you with this.

Humboldt Internet does not require a terminal window to be brought up before or after connecting to us. Don't check the boxes asking for the terminal window to be brought up before or after connecting.

Now that your modem is installed we'll go onto step 2.

Step 2: Installing Dial-Up Networking.

Double-click on the icon for My Computer.

If Dial-Up Networking is an icon here go to step 3. If it is not installed as an icon stay with this section and go into the Control Panel folder.

Double-click on Add/Remove Programs

Click the Windows Setup tab at the top of the screen and click the little box next to the telephone icon marked Communications.

Click Details and check Dial-Up Networking.

Click OK the click OK again in the next window. At some point you may be asked to put in your Windows 95 disk or CD to install this program, so have it ready to go.

Step 3: Adding TCP/IP Protocol

Go into My Computer, and go into Control Panel.

Double-click the Network control panel.

In the Network Configuration window you should see, at the very least, Dial-Up Adapter. If not, make sure that you installed Dial-Up Networking in step 2.

If you see, in the list of components, an item that says just "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP --> Dial-Up Adapter", go on to Step 4.

It is very important to make sure there is only one TCP/IP component. To check, scroll down in the configuration window to see if TCP/IP is installed.

If you don’t have TCP/IP listed we will now install the protocol. If you have two TCP/IP’s listed, delete one. It is possible that both will disappear, so follow the instructions for adding the protocol.

Click the Add button. A new window will appear. Select Protocol, and then click Add.

On the left, select Microsoft. The list on the right will change.

On the right, select TCP/IP, then click OK.

Your computer will pause for a second, then you’ll be back at the Network control panel. TCP/IP should now be on the list. If you can’t see it, scroll down through the list.

Step 4: Changing Network Settings for TCP/IP

After your computer has restarted it should be back in control panel folder. If you don’t see the control panel folder, double click on My Computer and then open control panel. Now open the Network Control Panel.

Double-click on TCP/IP, then click the Properties button. Make sure you only have one TCP/IP.

In the IP Address tab make sure that the "Obtain IP Address Automatically" is selected.

Click on the DNS Configuration tab at the top of the window.

Select the box at the top that says Enable DNS.

In both the Host and Domain boxes, enter humboldt1.com

In the DNS Server Search Order box, enter 206.13.45.1. Then click Add. The numbers will drop down into the lower box. Then enter into the same box the address 206.13.28.11 and click Add. This number will also drop down.

Click the OK button at the bottom. (If you can’t see the OK button, grab the blue bar at the top of the window and drag the window up until you can see the OK button.)

There may be a window that asks to name your computer. Enter the following information:

Click on OK.

You’ll be back at the Network control panel.

Click on OK.

You’ll be asked if you want to restart your computer. Click on Yes.

When you reboot, Windows may ask you for a username and password. Enter your first name in the username field and leave the password field blank. Click OK. You may get another dialogue box asking you to put in your password – leave both fields empty (this is important) otherwise you will always get that dialogue box when Windows starts up.

Step 5: Making a connection for Humboldt Internet with your Dial-Up Networking

Go into My Computer again and double-click on Dial-Up Networking.

When the Dial-Up Networking window is open, click on the icon to make new connection. This is the Dial-Up Networking wizard.

If this is your first time making a new connection you will be prompted for choices so follow the instructions on your computer.

In the Make New Connection wizard, the name of the computer you are dialing is Humboldt Internet.

Then click Next.

Check your phone book to see that the following phone numbers are local to you. The area code is 707. Our phone numbers are 825-4600 and 725-0626.

If you have a modem that handles 56kbps use these numbers:

Click on Next, then on Finish.

In your Dial-Up Networking folder, you’ll now see a new icon named Humboldt Internet. Click only once on this icon to highlight it, then click on the File menu and select Properties.

You may have already been prompted to enter in the properties information. Here is the information you need to enter into the properties information box:

Click Server Type and in the window that pops up. You should see PPP, Windows 95, NT in the type of dial up server box.

In this same window make sure the box at the bottom is checked that says TCP/IP. All of the other boxes can be left blank.

Click TCP/IP settings.

Click Server assigned IP address.

Click Specify Name Server Addresses and enter in the following addresses:

Make sure the boxes are checked at the bottom which say to use header compression and use default gateway on remote network.

Click OK to this screen and the next two screens to get back to Dial-Up Networking.

You should now be able to dial into Humboldt Internet and connect. To do this double-click on the Humboldt Internet icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder. It should have your login name, just as it looks on your sign-up sheet. If you don’t have your login name listed, enter it now in lowercase. Also enter in your password, from the signup sheet, in lowercase. To save the password so you don’t have to type it in every time you want to connect to Humboldt Internet just check the box marked save password. If the box is grayed out so that you can’t check it, look on our Web site under Tutorials for information on correcting this.

Now click the Connect box and you will start the connection to our service.

To create a shortcut for your dialer:

Now, let’s create a shortcut to the Humboldt Internet connection so you can access it easily from the desktop. To do this, click only once on the Humboldt Internet icon and hold the mouse button down. Keep holding the button down as you drag the icon onto your Desktop (the Desktop is where your wallpaper is). When the icon is on your Desktop, let go of the button. You’ll be asked if you want to create a shortcut. Click on Yes to finish creating the shortcut. You’ll now have a Humboldt Internet icon on your Desktop.

To configure Windows 95 for Automatic Dialing:

You can configure Windows 95 to automatically dial a connection to Humboldt Internet when you open your Internet software. To do this, you will first need to go into your Control Panel and double-click on the Internet icon. At the top of this window you will need to click on the tab labeled Connection.

If you have an older version of Windows 95, or a Windows 95 upgrade, you will select Connect to the Internet as needed. On the next line, you will select your Humboldt Internet connection from the drop-down menu labeled Use the following Dial-Up Networking Connection:. Now, just click Apply and then click OK.

If you have a newer version of Windows 95 or if you have Windows 98, you will select Connect to the Internet using a modem. Now, click the Settings button to the right and select your Humboldt Internet connection from the drop-down list below Use the following Dial-Up Networking Connection:. Click OK at the bottom of this window, then click Apply and then click OK.

Now you’re ready to connect !

To connect to Humboldt Internet:

Double-click on the Humboldt Internet icon on the desktop. This will bring up a box asking for your login name and your password. If they’re not already filled in, go ahead and fill in your login name and your password (remember that they should always be in lowercase). Your login name and your password are on your signup sheet.

Remember that your login name does not have @humboldt1.com in it!

If the box marked Save Password is lit, check it so you won't have to type in your password every time you connect. (If the save password box is not checkable, there is a tutorial on our web page to fix this.)

Click on the Connect button to connect.

Once you’re connected to Humboldt Internet

OK, I’m on-line, now what?

Some of you may have the Plus version of Windows 95 which comes with Internet Explorer which is your Web browser (it’s very much like Netscape). To see if you have Internet Explorer just use the Find command on the Start menu to see if it’s on your computer. Type in Internet Explorer in the Named: field. Press OK. When you find Internet Explorer, you can drag the icon from the Find window to the desktop to create a shortcut. The icon looks like a globe with a magnifying glass on it. Double-click on the Internet Explorer icon to start it up (make sure you are dialed-in to our service or you might get an error message).

We have included on our software disk, and on our Web site, a very good email program called Eudora. We highly recommend it. Available on our website is a tutorial on downloading and installing Eudora.

Internet Explorer also comes with Microsoft Exchange, which is an email program. For information configuring Exchange look at the help files in Windows 95 or see Microsoft’s home page at – http://www.microsoft.com

If you would like to use Netscape you can either use Internet Explorer to connect to our site and download Netscape or use the version of Netscape that came on the disk we gave you when you signed up. We recommend that you download the newest version of Netscape from our site or from Netscape's site. A tutorial on downloadingand installing Netscape is available on our website.
