What are newsgroups and how do I use them?
Newsgroups are discussion groups that are run by using something like E-mail. There are over twelve thousand of them and they are growing daily. Newsgroups are useful if you have a hobby or a business and you want to be involved in a discussion about a particular subject. The basic idea is that you subscribe to a newsgroup and you can read all the mail regarding it that is posted by the other participants of the newsgroup. You can also post your own messages.
If you feel you are ready to setup your newsgroups the only information you will need to know is the newsgroups address:
news.humboldt1.com and news2.humboldt1.com
The guide below will help you configure news groups.
It only takes a few minutes to access newsgroups in Outlook Express.
Open up Outlook Express like normal
Go to 'Tools' at the top of the screen and click it
Go down to 'Accounts' and click on that
This will open 'Internet Accounts'
On the right hand side you will see 'Add', click on that
This will open a menu, click on 'News
'
It will say 'Display name' enter your name, ex. John Smith
Click the 'Next ' button
It will say 'Email address' enter your email address
Click the 'Next ' button
It will say 'News (NNTP) server, enter news.humboldt1.com
Below that it will have a check box and say 'My news server requires me to log on'
Our server does not require this, so you will leave this blank.
Click the 'Next ' button
Click the 'Finish' button
Click the 'Close' button
It will then say 'Would you like to download newsgroups from the news account you added?', you will click the 'Yes' button
This may take a few minutes, please be patient
Now you will see all of the newsgroups listed
To access the newsgroups go to 'View' at the top of the screen and click on that
Go down to 'Go to Folder
' and click on that
Click on 'news.humboldt1.com' and then click 'OK'
This will open up your newsgroups
Your newsgroups are now setup
