The 56K modems Humboldt Internet uses are US Robotics Total Control DSP cards, among the most expensive and most reliable modems in the world. But even under ideal circumstances, it's not uncommon for folks to connect at less than 56K. Here is some information about 56K that you may find useful if you're purchasing a 56K modem or if you're having problems with a 56K modem.

• The name "56K" is a misnomer. Commonly, people connect consistently at rates between 44K and 48K. In fact, FCC regulations restrict modem manufacturers from making a modem that would be capable of going over 53K.
• Splitters and modem surge protectors have been known to have a negative effect on connections. If you find yourself being disconnected often, see if you're using a splitter or modem surge protector and try connecting without these devices. Likewise, having a telephone or answering machine plugged in to your modem or to the same phone jack as your modem has been known to cause problems.
• If you consistently connect at a low rate or get disconnected often and have ruled out devices such as splitters and surge protectors, try calling the telephone company. If you are a Pacific Bell customer, call 611 to be connected to the phone company's repair service and ask them to "test the line" They will test the line for free and will let you know if they find any obvious problems. If you are a Citizen's Utilities customer, please dial the appropriate number for your area and ask that your line be tested for noise. The telephone company does not guarantee their telephone lines for 56K modem connections, so they may not be able to help you!
• Another way to check to see if a slow connection problem lies with your phone lines or your modem is to take your computer and/or modem to the house of a friend who has reached high speeds with a 56K modem and see how your modem rates. You are also welcome to bring your computer and/or modem to our office and test it here. If the modem is found to connect at high speeds, the problem may be with your phone lines.
• Some places, like Costco, will allow you to return a modem if you're unhappy with its performance. Before you buy your modem, it's a good idea to ask about the store's return policy to find out if you'll be able to return your modem if 56K doesn't work out for you.
